Recordist/Credit: Elizabeth Wilson

Originally recorded in 1972, on location at her home on the Nez Perce Reservation in Lapwai, Idaho, the 91-year old Nez Perce elder, Elizabeth Wilson tells old stories and sings traditional songs, remembered from her childhood. A relative of Chief Joseph, this astute and expressive elder shares very special personal memories and moments of her tribe's history. She met Chief Joseph for the last time in 1904, just before his death, when he spoke at her graduation from Carlisle Indian school in Pennsylvania -- an event as fresh to her 68 years later, as it was that unforgettable day. Now, more than 30 years after this material was originally recorded by Bernie Krause and Robert Primes, her story still becomes legend. Special thanks to Professor Loran Olsen, WSU, Pullman, for his help and advice; to the Nez Perce Tribal Council for their support during this project, and to the memory of Angus Wilson, Elizabeth Wilson's son, who led us to miraculous places. A portion of proceeds from this album will be paid directly to the Nez Perce Scholarship Fund.
