A Biophony™ Album
This 11,000 acre pristine and unusual habitat about 20 miles from Naples, Florida, was completely wild when first established in the early 1950s. Now it is surrounded by intense development within arm's reach of the fences that define its borders. While there is incredible beauty to be seen, it is extremely difficult to record soundscapes there. By the late 90s, when Bernie Krause was commissioned to record soundscapes for the visitor center on the refuge, it was nearly impossible to capture the delicate acoustic textures of the swamp without the intrusion of nearby domestic animals and traffic noise in the distance. Here is his careful portrait of the Refuge's wilder side.
