This one, from a remote lake in the Chippewa National Forest, provides an especially poignant sense of place with an unusual story that unfolded in the spring of 2008. Aside from tail slaps, beaver vocalizations have been especially difficult to record. A bit more than 32 minutes into this recording, as the sun goes down, a beaver swims in solitary circles around the small lake where where forest management workers had dynamited his lodge earlier that afternoon. In the process, not only was the animalﾒs home destroyed but probably its offspring and mate, as well. Just as I'm setting up I hear the first avian voices welcoming the sun and a beautiful Spring morning. The solitary call of a White-crowned Sparrow is soon followed by another. Then, in the distance, a single Raven. Soon the rapid, falling, chattering of a Brewer's Sparrow can be heard along with a Costa's Hummingbird. As the sky grows lighter this tapestry of voices becomes more dense, and the rich fabric of life at this desert oasis is revealed.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cem\u003eApril 17, Dawn, Anvil Spring:\u003cbr\u003e \u003c\/em\u003eIt's quiet, in just the right way; nothing but the birds, and this morning's coyote calling. His long howls, reverberating throughout the valley, his solo accompanied by Mockingbirds, and the ever present White-crowned Sparrow who sounds the keynote of this dry desert landscape. As morning grows toward day and the hum of insects increases, a Black-throated Sparrow sings and a Costa's Hummingbird swoops and dives. Recorded at the onset of the rainy season and beginning 2 hours after sunset, these recordings represent a 24 hour cycle of events in a flooded, terrestrial, and riparian forest. It takes enormous patience and dedication to capture these soundscapes wherever they exist and the process is not without certain danger. It is also difficult to find places where these pristine expressions of the natural world can still be found. While there is incredible beauty to be seen, it is extremely difficult to record soundscapes there.
